The topic was the fact that we are facing a losing battle with the birds stripping the fruit from the fruit bushes before we can pick them. This is even when netting is draped over them, admittedly loosely. Still according to my mother it seems to me they are getting under the netting, jumping up and picking the red currants, black currants, and gooseberries. I suggested that the permanent solution to this is to erect a fruit cage over the whole area. Yes of course my mother responded. This is what we thought about forty-five years ago but the issue was the cost of these things. Perhaps now it costs £1,000, perhaps even £2,000, to do it properly. At that time, setting up a family, starting a house, etc. , they hadn't the means to do this. This is the dilemma of the young person. When you need the money most to do things well, to do quality things, you haven't got it because older people are coercing you to work hard for not very much money. You've got to save for the rent and all that kind of thing so it becomes very problematic. What you need to be paid, actually, as a young person is your highest wage and for it to tail off as you age but that's conversely not how the situation is. Now I, of course, am a supporter of things like equalisation of the minimum wage for young people and for young people to be paid the same as everybody else, basically, to be paid fairly. I do recognise that young people can be very adept if they do good jobs, do hard work, do work that other people can't do. They need to be rewarded but again this is one thing that has to be done gradually. You can't immediately reverse the wages of the young and the old because all those old people, those poor sods that had struggled all their life to build up their wealth, now find that they're coerced again by the younger person if you suddenly paid her a heck of a large wage. The older person is now scrabbling about to look after himself. As in many things there's got to be compromise. Things have got to move gradually to create the best outcomes and they've got to be sensitively done. This seems to be the nature of life. There's no going to be big shocking change, no magic nirvana that can bring about the perfect society immediately. It's got to be thought about. Post a comment: |
